U.S. Senator Tommy Tuberville spoke on a variety of issues in Huntsville on Monday afternoon to the Huntsville-Madison County Chamber of Commerce, with a key emphasis on the growing threats to American food security.
Tuberville (R-Auburn), a member of the U.S. Senate Agriculture Committee, warned the audience that American food security is in grave danger.
“Every time I visit Alabama, I hear from farmers who are struggling to stay afloat in Joe Biden’s economy,” said Tuberville. “Here’s what’s happening. We lost in the last few years 150,000 farms in this country. You don’t listen, you don’t hear this part, this kind of stuff. But I’m going to tell you, 150,000 farms have gone under.”
Tuberville said that many farms will be lost in the near future if changes are not made on a federal level.
“They can’t make it because prices and regulations have gone up so much. They have gone up increasingly. And we lost 150,000. We will lose this year, another hundred thousand farms in this country.”

According to Tuberville, America may not be growing its own food supply for much longer.
“We will not grow our food in five years if we keep up this place. That’s the reason we’re fighting,” he said. “We’re fighting hard for our farmers so they can survive. A lot of farmers are in this county or this area. Always think of farming just like the military because if you’re not food sufficient in your country you have got problems. We’re going to have a huge problem with food in this country.”
“So I’m just telling you, being on the Ag committee, I see it every day. Our farmers are collapsing.”
Net farm income has fallen $70 billion since 2022 representing the fastest and largest decline in U.S. farm profitability, over a two-year period of time. Overall input costs are up $27 billion since 2021.
